Rocky Worlds: Beauty in Planetary Science

Event schedule details
Saturday 7 June and Sunday 8 June
12.00–18.00
Event location details
Shields Space and Dalby Court
City and Guilds Building, Imperial College London
Join us for a unique artistic encounter with terrestrial planets in our Solar System!
Learn the similarities and differences between Venus, Earth and Mars through art. Recreate colourful landscapes of Venus, while learning about the unusual topography and formations found only on our twin planet. Or learn all about the Jezero Crater on Mars, where the NASA's Perseverance rover is searching for signs of life from a lake that existed billions of years ago, while drawing your dreams of what life may once have looked like on the planet.
Researchers from Imperial College London's Department of Earth Science and Engineering will share their expert insights while you create your visions of the terrestrial planets. Including what scientists call analogue sites found on Earth, which are used to study the geology of extra-terrestrial rocky worlds, including evidence of volcanic activity on Venus and the presence of water on Mars.
There will be activities happening throughout the day, but don’t miss our twice daily drawing sessions taking place in Dalby Court, led by painter Lily Hibberd, with Imperial College London scientists and special guest artists.
Come along to either ‘Volcanic Venus’ from 14.00–15.00 or ‘Life on Mars’ from 15.30–16.30.
