London is finally getting its first taste of urban agriculture, a revolution that could support the dietary needs of its growing population. However, the benefits of the capital’s increasing number of community gardens, rooftops, vertical and indoor farms, and aquaponic water-based systems go beyond food security and reducing Londoners' food miles. It brings communities together and helps to raise understanding about where food comes from among the next generation.
This year’s Great Exhibition Road Festival is partnering with the Grow Urban Festival on a panel session to explore London’s food-producing potential. Together, local London food producers and policy experts will look at where food is being grown in the capital today and what unusual, unused spaces could be farmed tomorrow. They will also debate how this movement could be further promoted and encouraged by local authorities and how the public can get involved.
