Can Buyukberber

Can Buyukberber is a visual artist and director working on immersive audiovisual experiences blurring boundaries between physical and digital spaces. His practice consists of experiments with virtual/augmented reality, projection mapping, geodesic domes, large-scale displays and digital fabrication. Driven by an interdisciplinary thinking which extends to art, design and science, his work focuses on human perception, exploring new methods for non-linear narratives and emergent forms.

Can Buyukberber's audiovisual fantasy was inspired by conversations with Dr Martina Di Simplicio at Imperial College London. Her research focuses on mood instability, one of the first manifestations of distress in young people and looks at how digital tools can be used to address mood instability and promote emotional well-being.

Mati (Sanskrit: understanding, mindful, intuition, perception) is the first short piece, a glimpse of how this art and science collaboration may come to life when fully realized in physical space.

Mati / Be Your Friend transcript:

Whatever happened, whatever you feel, now imagine it happened to your best friend and imagine what you would say to them if they were as distressed or upset as you might be feeling now.

When you have found the words, imagine speaking to your best friend. Whisper those words in your mind as if you were telling them to your best friend. Can you see their smile vividly, smiling at you? How does that feel?
